But they mostly use that in their sheet metal department. What they're doing works just fine for them, as it does in far more shops than you seem willing to accept.Īs for accepting models, they certainly do keep their Solidworks version up to date. You don't get bonus points for using the latest toys. You make money by getting quality parts out the door cheaply.

Somehow, I doubt either one of them cares whether or not some random software snob on the internet thinks they're "relevant." The bigger shop is run by two brothers who bring in high 6 figures each, every year, and they pay their employees about what everyone else around here pays. But the fact is, they put out parts at the same prices as their competitors. If a shop can get parts out the door within tolerances, and at competitive prices, why should anyone care weather they use the newest toys, or scratch everything out with files? I don't have much positive to say about either of those shops I mentioned. You know, I think its good there are still shops out there running this ancient shit.when they are compared to me, I look that much better You may find this hard to believe, but some people would rather make money than bask in your self proclaimed awesomeness. Shit man, V9 is like 25 years old! Sooooo many things have changed in the machining world in that amount of time. Obviously the shops you've mentioned have never heard of HSM and I really doubt they have touched a machine with more than 3 axis. Like I said.if your doing anything relevant. You know, I think its good there are still shops out there running this ancient shit.when they are compared to me, I look that much better I mean.you cant even use native Solidworks files in V9.your a job shop and you cant accept the most common CAD file type on the market I think I should call this 50 man shop you speak of and ask for 20% commission of any cost improvements I can make in their shop. I've been using X8 for about a year now, after 2 years on X5, and 3 on X3, and I can still get simple parts to the machine faster in 9.1 than any version of X.Like I said.if your doing anything relevant. You don't need the newest, fanciest toys to be "relevant." 9.1 was a great 2 1/2 axis milling package, and it still works fine for 95% of the jobs out there. I also worked in a product shop 5 years ago that still used software from the 80's. But I've worked for two different job shops in southern California who still use 9/9.1. I agree that it's not something colleges should be teaching anymore. Many are still using mastercam version 9 not X9 but version 9 i believe the decision to not have mastercam work on older computers was a big reason for this. I know for a fact that night school mastercam classes at a local college was canceled many times for lack of students relatively recently when they stopped using X2.

Its 15 years old now, not sure why you'd expect leading edge CAD/CAM software to still support this OS.especially a 32 bit architecture. You ran X2 on XP 32 bit machine because XP was only 5 years old then. With any computer you should only be expecting 3 years of effecient life (from manufacture date) from a computer. Any student enrolled in a serious engineering or trade school program will probably be buying a brand new machine and are usually given specifications before hand on the type of machine needed to run the applications they will be using in school. I doubt Mastercam has lost any college students due to this and I doubt you'll find any students running 15 year old laptops. i firmly believe mastercam lost a lot of students and colleges lost a lot of students when students found out the home version of mastercam did not run on their home computersYou ran X2 on XP 32 bit machine because XP was only 5 years old then.

I had no problems running mastercam X2 on XP 32 bit windows home version. seeing how they run just fine and i have not had problems i usually do not buy new computers til one fails to work. Yes and that means XP and Vista home versions and 32 bit will not work as i found out.
